Beginners Dilemma

Now i assume that you have bought(or borrow) a guitar and you set with all the energy and passion of the world to be a guitarist overnight but hold on!!! the road is not going to be easy but full of hurdles.

I have seen lot of people giving up initially while learning, some were my friends, even one friend of mine and i started learning guitar together in fact he has bought guitar before i could have one. But then he gave up in initial phase and i started to do practice with his guitar and then when i have some hands on guitar then i went on to buy my own. So the point i want to make here is that don't give in initial phase because lots of things will happen. Some of the typical problems one face are
  • Your hand are always touching the string.
  • Fingers are not bending properly.
  • Getting strain and pain in fingers.
  • No pleasant sound coming out of guitar when you play.
These are some of the problems everybody encounters initially but remember tha nobody become guitarist overnight its days of hard-work and sometimes pain that somebody takes to learn it.

So one have to be very patience in the beginning i would say for the first month don't expect that anything extraordinary will come out from your playing. Because the initial exercises will be boring too such as tabbing(tabbing is playing single notes in some order) in some order or something like that but once your hands have started moving on guitar everything will be lightening fast u will learn, play new chords and leads everyday. So patience is the real key for wanna be guitarist initially.Once you are ready with lots of patience than its time to start.

Picking up the guitar

For a naive wanna be guitarist buying guitar could be as tough as buying vegatable from the market u never go to the looks of it but u have to see it by every angle as possible. The first thing i would say to a beginner buying a new guitar is to roam around different shops and try as many guitar as possible(although u don't know how to play it but still u can play strings and listen to the sound). That can actually get you some idea about good/bad sounding guitars. If you want to go to more technicality of it you have to understand the architecture of guitar. Now proffessionals generally look for guitar parts such as the straightness of neck, nice finishing of bridge etc so if you have any of your friend who has some experience of playing guitar or any proffessional you know better take them with whenever you are going to buy the guitar.

Amongst indian companies i would prefer to buy a hobner jumbo, signature jumbo(calcutta made) guitar of which a decent one will come around 3K and at the same price you can even get some china made guitar(can you imagine a field where china guys are not there no you cannot!!! ) such as Gb&A , J&D. These were around 3K budet guitars but if you want to spend more you can have decent Yamaha guitar at around 5K. Then if your budget is around 10K+ than you can go for Ibanez, Fender, Washburn(I won't describe Taylor, Martin here). But I would prefer to start with a decent medium budget guitar and then move on to some high quality ones once you have got some hold on to it.

What's this is all about
